The phone call fraud

This happened to an acquaintance a couple days ago. It's a phone call scam where they pretend to be Microsoft support technicians.

They tell you that they're receiving constant security warning from your machine and that they have to enter remotely to fix it, since they might be using your computer to infect others.

When asked how one should know they are really who they say they are, they tell you to look at your product code, since only the owner and Microsoft know it. What they do is tell you to execute an "assoc" command, which gives you the CLSID number that they tell you so you confirm it. Using this command, almost all Windows systems have this number.

Once confirmed, they remotely access your device and can install any kind of virus. If that wasn't enough, they tell you that, to fix the problem, you have to pay an annual protection fee, which, if you accept, they can get your credit card number. If you refuse to pay, they say that they won't give you the password and you won't be able to use your machine, not even in safe mode.

You have to keep in mind that Microsoft doesn't make unsolicited phone calls.
